Selling a business: Five Takeaways for Owners

A business transition can be one of the largest financial events in an owner’s life, but the financial details are only part of the planning. The company’s employees, culture, customers, family, leadership, and long-term purpose may all be affected at the same time.

BMSS Family of Companies’ July 9 webinar, Business Ownership as Stewardship, brought Luke Brooks of BMSS Wesson Wealth Solutions and Clint Park of Sovereign’s Capital together to discuss how owners can prepare with greater purpose and clarity.

Five ideas stood out.

Every owner eventually transitions. The change may be planned or unexpected. Beginning early can help the business prepare for succession as well as disruptions involving health, family, leadership, or markets.

Strong businesses tend to transition better. Clear values, financial discipline, governance, leadership continuity, and a company that can operate without constant owner involvement can create more options. These qualities benefit the business even when a transition is delayed.

Internal and external paths require different preparation. A family or management succession may depend on leadership development, governance, financing, and clear ownership expectations. An outside sale may require diligence readiness, buyer fit, confidentiality, and clarity about the owner’s post-closing role.

Identity and family communication matter. The business often gives the owner purpose, relationships, and structure. A practical plan for the next chapter can help the owner evaluate future roles and financial decisions. Spouses and key family members should also have enough information to discuss expectations and trade-offs.

The advisory team needs one shared definition of success. Legal, tax, financial planning, valuation, transition, insurance, and charitable professionals may all be involved. Each should provide advice within their specialty while working from compatible assumptions and timing.

A useful starting point is to ask what success should look like personally, financially, and values-wise; what purpose the business should continue to serve; and whether the family and advisors are aligned around those answers.
